Resale is running out of clothes, not buyers. Secondhand is projected to hit 393 billion dollars by 2030, and the line ThredUp buried under that number is that supply, not demand, is now the constraint.
Only that is true if you stand in the right country. Kantamanto in Accra takes fifteen million secondhand garments a week and burns or dumps roughly forty percent. There is no shortage of used clothing, only of the sellable sliver a pricing model pays for.
What to do:
- Sell what you stopped wearing before the moths do; it is worth more than you think
- Don't confuse a company's supply problem with a virtue: a fourth secondhand jacket is still a fourth jacket
- Look at the seams; a boring-named coat outlasts a hyped one
The greenest garment is the one already on your back, worn another year.
