The Devil Wears Prada 2 opened to 77 million dollars, nearly three times the 2006 original, and pushed the two-film franchise past a billion dollars. Its 233.6 million global debut is the biggest opening of Meryl Streep's career.

Why it worked:

  • Millennials, not Gen Z, showed up: women were 76 percent of the opening crowd, women under 25 just 12 percent.
  • The whole band came back, original cast, director, and writer, and the film gave them something real to play: the slow death of print magazines.
  • Every studio saw the number, so brace for Practical Magic 2, Shrek 5, Jumanji, and the rest of the 2000s-nostalgia wave.

The catch: nostalgia only sells when the reunion has something true to say. Slap the name on a hollow retread and audiences smell it. It hits Disney+ and Hulu on July 29.
