I have a rule about background music while I write: it cannot ask me for anything. No lyrics I want to sing along to, no drop that yanks my head up from the page. For a couple of years now, the thing that has quietly passed that test is a small handful of house DJs who film their sets and put them on YouTube, whole and unbroken, no talking. I put one on, and an hour later I look up and I have actually done the work. These are the four I keep coming back to. None of them are trying to sell you anything except a good hour. That is exactly why they work.
LIKA
LIKA is a Munich DJ and producer, and her channel is not much more than a year old, which you would never guess from how assured the sets are. She has a background in piano and singing, and you can hear it: her deep-house grooves sit on real melody, warm and unhurried, the kind of thing that sounds like a good morning even at four in the afternoon. The set below is filmed along the Isar river in Munich, and it is pure coffee-and-daylight music, groovy without ever getting in your face.

Flavour Trip
Flavour Trip is not one person but two, Amii and Jimmi, the pair who packed up and went to travel Europe in a camper van with their cats, recording a house mix from a different spot each month, usually with a meal cooking somewhere in the frame. It is a whole vibe, and it should be too much, but the music holds it up. Their soulful, funky house is genuinely well curated, songs you did not know you needed, and this rooftop lounge set is my go-to for the back half of a workday, when I need calm but not sleepy.

Tinzo
Tinzo is a New York DJ, one half of the sibling pair Tinzo and Jojo, who founded Book Club Radio, a party and a YouTube channel of live-recorded sets. Her sound is groovy and a little cheeky, disco and R&B and house braided together, and it carries the room. The set here is a basement-party mix, and it is the one I reach for when the work is done and I just want the flat to feel like somewhere good is happening. It has a pulse without demanding you get up, though you might.
Where to find her: Book Club Radio on YouTube, at @bookclubradio, and tinzoandjojo.com.
Chris Luno
Chris Luno is a German DJ who has more or less built a genre out of the sunset set, filming melodic house in beautiful places right as the light goes gold. His whole thing is patience: long, slow-building mixes that never lunge for the big moment, which makes them perfect for the kind of focused work where you want momentum, not adrenaline. This one is him playing house on a beach until strangers start to dance, and it is as lovely and low-stakes as that sounds.
Where to find him: Chris Luno on YouTube, at @chrisluno.
That is the whole list. Four people, no gimmicks past the ones they are honest about, making hours of music that ask nothing of you and quietly give a lot back. Put one on and go do your thing.
