Venice's day-tripper fee is a register with a price on it, not a cap. It counts you and bills you, then lets everyone in: the city's own numbers show crowds flat or up while the take doubled to 5.4 million euros.
So plan around it:
- The charge only bites on 60 days (April to late July), and only 8:30 to 4pm. Arrive after four, or on any other day, and you owe nothing.
- Book at cda.ve.it, the city's own site: 5 euros by the fourth-last day, 10 after. Screenshot the QR code offline.
- Exempt visitors, including overnight guests, still have to register for a free code or they fail the scan.
- The minor islands (Lido, Murano, Burano, Torcello) are free even on red days.
Skipping the five-euro ticket is the most expensive way to see Venice: the fine runs 50 to 300 euros.
