On British trains and buses, playing your phone out loud to the annoyance of other passengers was already an offense years before anyone announced a crackdown.
British railway byelaws have covered it since 2005, with a ceiling of 1,000 pounds in England and Wales, the same ceiling the Liberal Democrats spent 2025 asking Parliament to spell out and advertise. Ireland's rules are older still, bye-laws from 1982 that to this day ban the gramophone, with a 100 euro penalty added in 2005. Only United wrote anything new, and it is a contract term rather than a fine.
In the Lib Dems' own poll of 2,174 UK adults, 54 percent would not feel comfortable asking someone to turn it down. A rule policed by passengers asking each other needs somebody willing to ask. Tell a member of staff instead.
