Every June, Funchal's whole bay watches three countries burn twenty minutes of gunpowder over the pier, and the best part is that it is free: nobody sells a better seat than the one you walk up and take.
The June contest is an audition. Each fires one pyromusical at 10:30 p.m. on the first three Saturdays, competing to help stage the island's December show, which set a Guinness record in 2006 with 66,326 fireworks.
If you want to catch it:
- Any spot on the Avenida do Mar, the Pontinha pier, or a hillside miradouro sees the whole sky
- Two trophies split it, a jury's Atlantic Trophy and the public-voted Madeira Tão Tua
- In 2026, China took the jury, Ukraine took the crowd
- Next year runs June 4 through 27, 2027
No wristband, no VIP deck. Same bay, same last bang off the mountains, for everyone.
