A voice note is cheap to send and expensive to receive, and the etiquette question is not generational taste but who pays for your convenience. It arrives as a locked box, opened only in real time, at the right volume, with your full attention rented for its full length. No wonder 55 percent say they often forget to listen and 88 percent forget what was said. Debrett's has the sharp rules:

  • Never send logistics by voice: instructions, dates, telephone numbers, addresses
  • Keep a recording under two minutes
  • Anything under five words should simply have been a text

Send the postcode as text and the feelings by voice, and never the reverse.
