A cocktail bar in Charlotte hands you a pouch at the door. You drop your phone in, it clicks shut, and for the next two hours you cannot get it back. The bar is called Antagonist, which is at least honest, and its co-owner Mike Salzarulo told Axios the locked Yondr pouch (the lockable fabric sleeve schools use to clear phones from a room for the day) was meant to "build a place that kind of forces you to connect." Reader, I want to like this. I nearly do. Then I notice the verb.

Phone-free dining is no longer a lone chef's crankiness. Restaurants and bars in at least 11 states, plus Washington, D.C., which has the most such venues of any single place, now put some kind of fence around the phone. The James Beard Foundation's January trends report put the backlash against the "phone eats first" habit in a section of its own, ten chefs pleading for presence. "I'd rather guests put their phones down and really taste what's in front of them," said the semifinalist Emily Yuen. The methods vary from the gentle to the lock-and-key: Delilah's supper clubs ask for no phones and no posting, a Maryland Chick-fil-A gives families free ice cream for keeping the table clear, and then there are the pouches that lock.

Here is the part nobody expected. In a Talker Research survey of 2,000 Americans, fielded for ThriftBooks in December 2025, half said they were deliberately cutting screen time, and the keenest by a distance were the young: 63 percent of Gen Z said they intentionally unplug, against 29 percent of boomers. The generation raised inside the phone is the one reaching for the off switch. It fits a grimmer backdrop. The World Health Organization reported last June that loneliness is now linked to more than 871,000 deaths a year, and Americans between 15 and 24 now spend roughly 70 percent less time in person with friends than they did in 2003, about 40 minutes a day against 150, by the US Surgeon General's 2023 advisory on loneliness. A person that hungry for company does not need to be told the phone is spoiling dinner. They already know.

Which is why I distrust the pouch, and it pays to be clear-eyed about who benefits from it. The driver here is not purely spiritual. Ben Tannenbaum of the nightlife platform LineLeap told Fox News that "guests are going out less often than they used to and spending more per visit when they do," so operators want the visit to land. A hospitality professor, Amanda Belarmino, put it more plainly: diners who are engaged "are more likely to eat multiple courses or order a second drink." The house, in other words, has a commercial stake in your undivided attention, and the lock is a blunt way to collect it.

It is also, as Tannenbaum admits, "at best, awkward in practice." Pouches, signage, a server sent to police the table: every one of them adds friction to the very evening it was meant to protect. And a locked phone is not only a silenced phone. Some venues have thought about this: one bar, Hush Harbor, installed a landline so a sitter or a relative can reach a diner in an emergency. But a landline does not summon the cab you need at midnight, or send the message you promised to send before you left, and it does nothing for the small worry that keeps a hand drifting toward a pocket that is no longer there. A host's first duty is to the least anxious version of the guest in that chair, and you cannot lock someone into serenity.

So keep the instinct and ditch the hardware. The courtesy that matters here is the one you choose: the phone face-down, then in the bag, because the person across the table is, for now, the whole world. One San Francisco kitchen prints a Japanese phrase on a card for its guests, ichi-go ichi-e, one time, one meeting. That is the rule worth keeping, and the reason to keep it yourself is the whole point. A restaurant that trusts you to put the phone away is paying you a compliment. The least you can do is deserve it.
