The smartest move in the coolcation surge is a calendar, not a destination: book a Nordic trip in July and a Mediterranean one in October, each timed to real fare and temperature numbers instead of a guess.
- July north: Reykjavik's average high is a comfortable 13.5C (56F) with nearly twenty hours of daylight, the week Barcelona hit a record 40.5C (105F). You pay peak prices for it.
- October south: Santorini's sea still holds at 20 to 22C, hotels drop 30 to 50 percent, and the island runs at half its summer crowd. Rome tells the same story, rooms 25 to 40 percent below summer.
Book the Nordic leg by April, the Mediterranean one once September turns. Just don't tell yourself the plane was the green choice because the destination was cool in July and quiet in October.
