The retreat from remote is a rounding error. Once every planned return-to-office mandate lands, America's work-from-home share falls from 21.2 to 20.8 percent of paid workdays, less than half a point. Hybrid already won.
Only 12 percent of employers with flexible staff plan a mandate, and when policy tightened, actual attendance moved 1 to 3 percent. The order is usually about control, not the office.
Don't spend your leverage on a bad week:
- Don't quit off a headline, and don't pre-comply with a mandate nobody gave you
- Find your real number: what the role requires onsite, in writing, versus what you do now
- If a change comes, negotiate the specific days, not the principle
- Argue the shared interest (coverage and collaboration), never fairness
The office settled, somewhere around Wednesday.
