The resale price is the new price tag. Nearly half of shoppers now check what a garment resells for before they buy it new (58 percent of Gen Z), and the keenest secondhand buyers are not broke students, they are luxury clients.

Resale already made up 27 percent of US online luxury apparel spending in 2024. Yet the brands pocket almost none of it, because the trade happens on Vinted and The RealReal, not in their shops (88 percent of US resale spend runs through marketplaces).

Use it anyway: before you buy new, look up the resale price. A healthy one is the closest thing fashion has to an honest quality signal, better than the label. Buy the thing that holds its value, and let the number make you buy less, not more.
