You just paid 20 pounds for the permit to enter Britain. The consolation: London's most expensive rooms cost nothing to walk into.

Every national museum is free, permanently, to its standing collection: the British Museum, National Gallery, both Tates, the V&A, Natural History, Science, the Wallace, free since 2001. Special exhibitions are ticketed; skip them if you're counting pennies.
Transport is capped. Tap the same contactless card in and out all day and London never charges more than 8.90 pounds across zones 1 and 2, frozen until March 2027. Keep it all on one tap, or the system runs two tallies and neither caps.
Come in winter. PwC has an average London room near 160 pounds a night in the first quarter, against 220 at the summer peak.

Come in February and the day costs little more than lunch and the permit that got you in.
