Indie skincare is outgrowing the giants, so the giants are buying it. NielsenIQ has indie beauty growing 22.3 percent against 6.1 for the conglomerates, and in facial skincare it's 23.2 versus 3.1, almost eight times faster. Read the driver split twice: 62 percent of indie growth comes from more shopping trips, 64 percent of conglomerate growth from price increases. One is demand, the other is a spreadsheet. So the majors buy what they can't out-innovate. L'Oreal paid around 13 times sales for Medik8's science story; e.l.f. paid about 4.7 for Rhode's founder audience. The multiple tells you what each buyer knew it was short of. And "transparency" is mostly a register, not a rigor: a percentage on the box is a claim like any other, and it still won't tell you who paid for the study.
