Slow breathing is cheap, safe, and genuinely useful, and much smaller than the reset button the internet sells. The best meta-analysis to date found a real but modest effect on stress (minus 0.35 on the standardized scale, small-to-medium), mostly on self-reported, short-follow-up outcomes.
Two honest caveats:
- People cannot keep it up: in one trial only 24 of 49 finished the breathwork arm, against 42 of 49 controls asked to do nothing
- Slow breathing is not the hard-breathing Wim Hof style, which is an adrenaline surge, and near water it risks shallow-water blackout, so never breathe hard by the sea
It is a small tool for a bad hour, no ladder and no cold sea required. Keep it that size, and it keeps working.
