Your acne cream can make its own benzene. Benzoyl peroxide is chemically unstable: heat it and give it time and some degrades into benzene, a known carcinogen. The molecule you paid for is the source, not a dirty supplier. Two labs disagreed on scale. Valisure's big exceedances came out of a heat oven; the FDA tested 95 products, found the problem narrow (six recalled), and said even decades of daily use pose a very low risk. Heat and time are the variables, so the fix is free:
- Keep it cool, out of the shower and off the radiator
- Never leave it in a hot car
- Use it before the expiration date, then throw it out
- If it's on the recall list, check the lot number and return it
Don't panic. Just give an unstable molecule cool, dark, and fresh.
